License.dat Soliwork Cosmos
License.dat Soliwork Cosmos
License.dat is a file that contains the license information for COSMOS products, which are simulation software tools that work with SOLIDWORKS, a 3D CAD software. COSMOS products include COSMOSWorks, COSMOSMotion, COSMOSFloWorks, and COSMOSEMS. Depending on the type of license, license.dat may be required to activate and use COSMOS products.

Types of licenses
COSMOS products can be licensed in two ways: standalone or network. Standalone licenses are for single users who install and run COSMOS products on their own computers. Network licenses are for multiple users who share a pool of COSMOS licenses from a central server. Each type of license has its own advantages and disadvantages, as well as different methods of activation.
Standalone licenses
Standalone licenses use product activation, which is an anonymous, secure, and hassle-free process that authenticates licensed users. Product activation requires a serial number for each COSMOS product, which can be obtained from the SOLIDWORKS website or the reseller. The serial number is entered during the installation process, and then the product is activated online or offline. Once activated, the product can be used without any restrictions. No dongle or hardware device is needed to run the product.
Product activation also allows users to transfer their licenses to another computer if they need to change their hardware or software configuration. To do this, users need to deactivate their licenses on the old computer and then activate them on the new computer using the same serial number.
Network licenses
Network licenses use SolidNetWork License (SNL) Manager, which is a software that manages and distributes COSMOS licenses from a server to client computers. SNL Manager requires a license file (license.dat) that contains the information about the number and type of COSMOS licenses available on the server. The license file can be obtained from the SOLIDWORKS website or the reseller. The license file is installed on the server along with the SNL Manager software.
To use COSMOS products on client computers, users need to connect to the server and request a license from the SNL Manager. The SNL Manager checks the availability of licenses and grants or denies the request accordingly. Users can also borrow licenses from the server for offline use for a specified period of time. When users are done with their work, they need to return the licenses to the server so that other users can access them.
How to activate license.dat
The activation process for license.dat depends on whether it is done online or offline. Online activation is recommended as it is faster and easier than offline activation. However, offline activation may be necessary if the server does not have internet access or if there are firewall issues.
Online activation
To activate license.dat online, follow these steps:
Save the license file (license.dat) to your computer's hard drive.
Download and install the SOLIDWORKS 2008 SolidNetWork License Manager from the SOLIDWORKS website.
When the SolidNetWork License File Wizard starts, select single and click Next.
Verify the computer name and note the port number (default is 25734).
Change Dongle ID to NIC Address for allowing Host-ID based licensing option. Click Next.
Click Read, then Browse and locate the license.dat file that you saved in step 1.
Click Finish, and then Finish again.
Offline activation
To activate license.dat offline, follow these steps:
Save and unzip the SNL_AllowMultHostIDs.zip file to any location on the server. This file can be obtained from CATI by calling 888-285-2284 or emailing support@cati.com.
Click on the Registry file SNL_AllowMultHostIDs.reg. This modifies the registry location to make Host-ID-based licensing option available in the SNL Manager.
Click Next.
Click Read, then Browse and locate the license.dat file that you saved in step 3.
Click Finish, and then Finish again.
Click on the Server Administration tab, then click on Modify.
Select Activate/Reactivate a software license, then click Next.
Select Save a copy of the license file to disk, then click Next.
Save the license file as sw_d.lic to a location that you can access from another computer with internet access.
Transfer the sw_d.lic file to the other computer and visit the following website: [www.solidworks.com/transfer].
Follow the instructions on the website to complete the activation process.
Transfer the sw_d.lic file back to the server and save it as sw_d.lic in the same location as before.
Click on the Server Administration tab, then click on Modify.
Select Activate/Reactivate a software license, then click Next.
Select Open existing license file, then click Next.
Browse and locate the sw_d.lic file that you saved in step 17.
Click Finish, and then Finish again.
After you activate license.dat for your COSMOS products, you can use them without any restrictions. You do not need a dongle or any other hardware device to run them. You can also transfer your license to another computer if you need to change your hardware or software configuration.
